Difference Between Engraving & Thermography

Engraving:
A metal plate or cylinder is engraved with the image to be printed. This indentation is then filled with ink and the piece of paper being printed is pressed against the plate or cylinder is called engraved printing or commonly called as Gravure Printing in the industry. As is obvious, the engraving of a plate or cylinder for this process is quite expensive and prohibitive for most applications.

Thermography:
A much cheaper process effectively giving the same effect as engraving - in thermography as the name suggests is a heat process of producing print. A power that melts to a clear liquid and gels to a clear solid is sprinkled on the wet printed ink freshly after having been printed. This piece of paper, now with the thermo powder is passed thru a heat tunnel melting the powder. Once the sheet exits the heat tunnel, the powder solidifies to a clear solid on the printed image, giving it relief.
